Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Monday Dec 19, 2016
Monday Dec 19, 2016
After the somewhat successful performance of Star Wars: The Force Awakens last year, Disney have decided to take a punt on another Star Wars movie. As two people somewhat familiar with and amenable to the series, Matt and Ed watched Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and decided to talk about the first so-called "standalone" Star Wars movie - what works, what doesn't, and how it stacks up against the other installments. They also reveal the real reason for the much-discussed reshoots, wonder why Darth Vader chose to live in the worst place imaginable, and paint Ben Mendelsohn as the Willy Wonka of the Star Wars universe.
Needless to say, there are spoilers. (Also some audio issues due to a faulty mic. We sincerely apologise for that.)

1986: Top Gun and Aliens
Monday Aug 15, 2016
Monday Aug 15, 2016
Following on from last week, in which they talked about the films of 1986, Matt and Ed spend this week digging into two of the biggest hits of that year: Tony Scott's Top Gun and James Cameron's Aliens. In addition to talking about the influence that the two films had on the blockbuster format (whilst also being unlike most contemporary blockbusters), Matt reminisces about an unusual Top Gun-adjacent present, and Ed disparages his 14 year old self's taste in movies.

145: O.J.: Made in America
Monday Jun 27, 2016
Monday Jun 27, 2016
ESPN's 30 For 30 strand has been producing great, fascinating documentaries about significant sporting events and athletes for years now, but the series may have reached its pinnacle with Ezra Edelman's seven and a half hour, five part miniseries about the life of O.J. Simpson. Encapsulating Simpson's football career, marriage, murder trial, slide into obscurity and eventual trial for burglary and kidnapping, Edelman's film also stands as a breathtaking examination of race, gender and celebrity in American society, the history of L.A. and systemic racism in the LAPD, and uses the prism of one man's life to tell the story of the society that created him. In short, it's excellent, and Matt and Ed thought it would be remiss of them not to discuss it.

139. Captain America: Civil War
Monday May 09, 2016
Monday May 09, 2016
We interrupt your regular scheduled programming to bring you a rare film review episode (we will do our episode on Drugs next week). Like much of the rest of the world, Matt and Ed saw Captain America: Civil War this weekend and it created an Iron Man/Captain America-style split in the Shot/Reverse Shot team in which one of them liked it more than the other. They work through their conflicted feelings about Marvel's latest behemoth, while also finding time to impersonate Michael Gambon, talk about mistrusting Bill Weasley, and fantasy-cast the best/worst remake of The League of Gentlemen imagination.

132. Hail, Caesar! and The Coen Brothers
Monday Mar 14, 2016
Monday Mar 14, 2016
To commemorate the release of Hail, Caesar!, which hit UK cinemas this week, Matt and Ed offer their thoughts on the film before going on to discuss the work of Joel and Ethan Coen more generally. In between talking about the brothers' pet themes, their relationship to classic cinema, and the notion of "moral authority" in their films, Matt describes a fever dream that maybe involves Dolph Lundgren, reveals an inside scoop on Harry Styles' acting experience, and the two discover/half-remember the most baffling film ever made.

Monday Dec 28, 2015
Another year has come and gone, and now we need to try and make sense of it. Fortunately, Matt and Ed are up to the task, and in this bumper round-up of the year they talk about some of the big film and TV stories, pitch some ideas for Episode VIII to Rian Johnson (#QuiJohnCandy), before finishing with a countdown of the Shot/Reverse Shot Top 10 Films of 2015.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Monday Dec 28, 2015
Monday Dec 28, 2015
Seeing that Matt and Ed spent the better part of a year talking about how much they were looking forward to a new Star Wars movie, it would be downright silly for them not to talk about the film now that it's actually out in the world.

77. 2014 Round-up
Sunday Dec 21, 2014
Sunday Dec 21, 2014
2014 was a great year for cinema and a pretty good one for Shot/Reverse Shot. The same kind of terrible films got released that somehow get green lit every year, but you seemingly couldn't move for interesting, intelligent and entertaining films in pretty much every genre and at most budgets. Meanwhile, we put out more episodes than we ever have before, completed our Alternate 100 project, and sought to push ourselves and the format of the show as much as we possibly could.

Friday Dec 28, 2012
In the final part of their 2012 round up, the boys finally get to learn what their top films of 2012 were. Compiled using a complex and highly secret mathematical formula, Joe and Ed take you on a 90 minute tour of the very best of 2012, firstly running through the films that didn't quite make the cut, before discussing the top 10 films of the year one by one. As always, listen, enjoy, rate and review!

Wednesday Dec 19, 2012
In the 2nd part of the Shot/Reverse Shot review of the year, Joe & Ed focus on the very worst 2012 had to offer. They look at the box office losers John Carter and Rock of Ages, Ed loses it whilst recalling the moment the plot turned in Woman in the Fifth and Joe relives the horror of Red Tails. Along the way, the boys disagree on what to make of the year's more divisive films, such as Shame and Ted, but patch things up before it gets out of hand. As always, listen, enjoy, rate and review!

Holy shit, the Shot/Reverse Shot Podcast is one year old. Like most one year olds, we still soil ourselves and dribble, thankfully in the form of 90 minutes of informative mildly amusing film natter. We've been on a bit of a hiatus, but we're back to round up the year that was 2012, with part one of our 3 part review of the ups and downs of the cinematic calendar. Here, in part one, Joe and Ed chat about 2012 in general, talk about the big news stories, box office winners and losers and do that bit where they talk about folk who have sadly left us in the last 12 months. Of course, this is presented in Shot/Reverse Shot's trademark rambling style, with tangents aplenty. As always, listen, enjoy, rate and review.

After a dodgy pilot, a name change and a technical calamity resulting in what is now known as 'the Lostcast', we are pleased to present episode 1 proper of Shot/Reverse Shot, a series of mildly engaging, occasionally profound, but mostly gibberish podcasts. Shot/Reverse Shot sees The Wooden Kimono's Joe Gastineau, hopelies.com editor in chief Adam Batty and A Mighty Fine Blog's Edwin Davies attempt to talk coherently about films within the confines of a theme that changes from episode to episode. As it is that time of year, we thought we'd kick things off with the theme of '2011'. It was a mammoth recording session, meaning the podcast had to be split into two halves. In part one, we discuss the general events of the year and in part two, we run down our picks for the films of 2011. Enjoy!
